Air Freight vs Manifest Cargo for Pets | Which is Better?
When you look into moving your pet internationally, you will quickly encounter three terms: excess baggage, manifest cargo, and unaccompanied air freight. They sound similar but work differently, and choosing the right option depends on your pet’s size, your route, and your timeline.
Excess baggage (accompanied)
Your pet travels on the same flight as you, booked through the passenger airline as excess baggage. You check your pet in at the departure airport, and they travel in the pressurised hold of your aircraft.
Advantages:
- Your pet is on your flight and arrives when you do
- Simpler coordination: one booking, one transit
- You know exactly which flight your pet is on
Disadvantages:
- Cabin/hold space is limited and must be booked well in advance
- Many long-haul routes have no capacity for live animals
- Rates can be higher than cargo for large animals
- Your routing choices are constrained to routes where your airline accepts pets
Manifest cargo (airline cargo division)
Your pet is booked as cargo through the airline’s cargo division, often on the same aircraft as passengers but managed separately. Specialist handling staff manage the animal at origin, transit (if any), and destination.
Advantages:
- Access to dedicated cargo routing options
- Often cheaper for large animals
- Not dependent on the same flight as the owner
- More flexible routing options (e.g. via a transit hub with better cargo handling)
Disadvantages:
- Your pet may travel on a different date than you (if cargo schedules differ)
- More complex coordination with cargo agents
- Cargo offices have different booking and documentation requirements from passenger services
Unaccompanied air freight
The same as manifest cargo in practice, but specifically describes the situation where the owner is not on the same aircraft or is not travelling at all. This is common when:
- The owner arrives at the destination several days before the pet
- The pet needs to transit via a country the owner is not visiting
- The owner is shipping a pet to another family member in a different country
Specialist pet freight agents manage the full chain: collection from the owner, crate preparation, documentation, airline booking, customs clearance at destination, and delivery.
Which is better?
For most international moves, manifest cargo via a specialist pet relocation agent is the most practical and often the most cost-effective option, particularly for large dogs. It offers the most routing flexibility and the most experienced handling staff.
For cats and small dogs, excess baggage on the same flight as the owner is a viable and convenient option where the route and airline allow it.
Discuss both options with at least two specialist agents before deciding.
